About the Tottori Residence
The Tottori family is a large landowner of Kasada Village, Mino District, Kagawa Prefecture, and is an old family that has produced successive village chiefs of Kasada Village since the late Meiji period. There is a record that successive generations of the family used their own money to open up the water veins of Kasada Village, restore and repair the ponds, and help many villagers suffering from drought. In the Sanuki Jinmei Jiten (1933), Tamesaburo Tottori (Nobuei), who succeeded his grandfather Kahei (Tomo Kihei) and his father Yujiro, said, "From June 1883, for three years He repaired the pond and improved the convenience of water supply.In this way, the villagers were spared from the drought, and I deeply admire his virtue."
In the head family of the Tottori family, following the death of Tamesaburo (Nobuhide) in 1886, the eldest son Jirohachi (1853-1936) succeeded to the family estate. Jirohachi became the fourth head of the village in 1876 (Meiji 9), and from 1890 (Meiji 23) served as the first mayor of Kasada village. In addition to serving as auditor of Sanuki Agricultural and Industrial Bank, he founded Mitoyo Agricultural School (currently Kasada High School), and in "Kagawa Prefecture Sanuki Country Prosperity Honor Mirror (Meiji 25)", he was in front of Western famous people (western part of the prefecture). name is engraved.

The Tottori Family Residence, which was registered as a national tangible cultural property this time, was the mansion of Tottori Juzaburo (1859-1933), who branched out from the Tottori Tamesaburo (Nobuei) family in 1875 (the name of the house was Mae). Shinya (Maejinya)”). Jusaburo was also the 4th generation mayor of Kasada Village and an auditor of the Sanuki Agricultural and Industrial Bank. When the Tottori family branched out, it is said that Jirohachi, who inherited the head of the head family, and Juzaburo, who branched out, received half equally. This is a rare occurrence, but legend has it that it was because Tsuna, the mother of the two, was very fond of Juzaburo.
Tottori Juzaburo first built the main house on the site located southeast of the main house. The main house has a thatched roof with tiled eaves on all four sides called a shihobuta, and retains the typical layout and architectural style of old houses in this area. The rice storehouse and east barn were built in 1894, and the architectural style suggests that the main building was built in the early Meiji period. (It is said that it was relocated rather than newly built, but this point requires further verification.) In 1906, Juzaburo built an earthen storehouse and used it as his retirement room in the main building. A back room was built in the back. In the near future, Hiya and West Barn were constructed.
After that, Juzaburo's eldest son Fujio (1885-1972) built a new tatami room with a Western-style building and a bathroom building from the late Taisho period to the early Showa period, and at the same time expanded the east barn and improved the garden and gate. Fujio, who served as the 7th mayor of Kasada Village, is known to have donated to Kitao Shrine in Mitoyo City, the adjacent Kasada Village Military Cemetery, Zentsuji Head Temple in Zentsuji City, and other places. In addition, he operated the 'Aoi Club Kachoen', which focused on cultivating hollyhocks and raising small birds in a greenhouse built on the premises. The current head of the family, Koji Tottori, has opened the grounds to run a guest house using a new tatami room, and the nickname "Kachoen" is derived from this.
In 1915 (Taisho 4), in Kagawa Prefecture, which was selected as the main base for the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Taisho, it was the head family of the Tottori family (Jirohachi Tottori) who dedicated the straw mat for the main base. In the Mitoyo City Archives, there are many photographs of related events. One of them shows Tottori Juzaburo's mansion. At the time of shooting, the Shinzashiki could not be confirmed, but instead the earthen wall and nagayamon can be seen. According to the interview, the area where the new tatami room is currently built was hit by a fire in the Taisho period, and the earthen wall and nagayamon gate on the south side were destroyed at that time. After that, Fujio, who was also good at asset management through stocks, invested a large amount of money and slowly built new tatami rooms and courtyards, and arranged the landscape of the mansion.
A total of 12 items were registered this time, including the main house, new tatami room, bathroom wing, back tatami room, storehouse, rice storehouse, Hiya, west barn, east barn, greenhouse, east gate, and west gate. Among the standards for registered tangible cultural property buildings, new tatami mats, bathhouses, and back tatami mats fall under the category of “modeling norms,” while others fall under “things that contribute to the historical landscape of the country.” ing. At the Tottori Residence, there are many buildings that were built from the Meiji period to the early Showa period. It is still in use due to maintenance. It is a very valuable example that allows you to see the development of mansions, the characteristics of buildings, and the changes in this area up close.

Built in the early Showa period, the guest house is a modern Japanese-style house with a Western-style building that was used for meetings and entertaining dignitaries. There is an anecdote that at that time, when he decided to build a new two-story building that was not in the main family's mansion, he first turned down the head family. Since the two-story building is tall, it is devised so as not to be visually stretched out, with transoms with glass, reed transoms with openwork around the perimeter, and trowel paintings with cloisonné patterns. Attention to detail is evident in the materials and details of the design, and the intricate carpentry techniques can be seen everywhere, such as in the cat-floored sliding doors of each tatami room, the coffered ceiling of the staircase landing, and the handrails with jewels with different designs for each corridor. be able to. The bathroom building was built at the same time as the guest house was built. In the irimoya with tiled roof, the wife is decorated with wooden grids. The interior is divided into a bathroom for visitors, a toilet, a washroom and a dressing room, and a rest area. The bathroom with the Goemon bath has a coffered ceiling with a ventilation opening, and the surrounding floor and washbasin tank are unified with mosaic tiles. Households were not allowed to use the bathroom building, which was built for dignitaries along with Shinzashiki, until around the middle of the Showa era. Today, it is a popular spot for Guest House Kachoen, and is a big hit with guests.
